The UK number plate system was introduced in late 1903, with the registration 'A1' being the first. Registration marks were issued in sequence and related to the area they were issued in. Private registrations vary greatly in price, usually due to two factors: Firstly, registration numbers are usually more expensive if they spell a particular word. An accurate valuation of private number plates is usually demonstrated quite quickly by the amount of interest shown in it by potential buyers. Desirability to the buyer is the main key to determining the value of a private registration. One needs to ask what does the number plate do for the person concerned, how well does it do it, and how many other number plates (although different) can do a similar job?
It is therefore easy to see that private registration marks which accurately spell a word, name or phrase are highly desirable. How accurately they do this determines their value to the buyer as does the level of availability of similar examples for sale at the time the buyer is buying.

Succinct number plates are not only extremely distinctive and noticeable but are highly desirable. They are much rarer than modern registrations due to the simple fact that they were issued many years ago and few were transferred to newer cars. Consequently when the vehicle came to the end of its life so did its succinct registration number. Therefore there are relatively few short number plates in circulation and only a handful on the open market at any one time.

Once you are the proud owner of a private registration number, the Cherished Numbers Dealers Association (CNDA) offers a certificated valuation service which is widely used by the insurance industry, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), and the legal and accountancy professions, as well as by owners of cherished numbers. An important point to remember is that your insurer will need to be made aware of the value of your personal numberplate should you wish to be compensated in the event of a loss or theft.
Registration number transfer and assignment is regulated and approved by the DVLA, who hold records of every vehicle registered in the United Kingdom. If you decide to buy a personal registration number you will also need to be certain that your recipient vehicle is suitable to enable it to participate in the transfer; for example you cannot transfer a registration number onto a vehicle if, in so doing, it would make the vehicle appear younger.
